On what seemed to many of us to be the first Day of Spring 2013 Neighbors staffers Lon Berven and Scott Andrews were overjoyed to welcome reps from Aspen Allina in Inver Grove Heights drove up on Saturday, May 31. The truck they were driving, generously supplied by Bester Brothers Transfer and Storage, was loaded to the max with food packs – nearly four tons of food donated by Allina, packed and delivered by Allina volunteers.
“Allina was very impressive with how organized their food packing operation was. The people who volunteered at Neighbors were filled with joyful giving spirits and they worked efficiently and just plain hard. It was also fun, there were families and many ages represented.” said Scott Andrews, Neighbors newest staff person who masterminded the unloading process.
Allina staffer Vicky Gephart was responsible for organizing the healthy meals event. She had signed on 60 of her colleagues and their family members to manage the food packing and then some even helped unload the boxes.
End the end of Saturday morning the weary volunteers went home, knowing as we at Neighbors know, how much this generous gift will mean to scores of families who depend on Neighbors’ Food Shelf.
As the days summer begin – as we do believe they will – our youngest clients are in special need of tasty and nutritious meals. Recognizing the importance of healthy summer meals, the health conscious donors at Allina chose well the contents of each food pack — corn, black beans, tomatoes, canned chicken, brown rice accompanied by recipes and tips on healthful living! Bester Brothers has been involved in many of Neighbors’ food projects. Joe Gullerud, their Vice President gives his time and leadership through Neighbors’ board of directors.
Many thanks to all involved from Neighbors and from all the families who will eat well and healthy this summer because of your generous donation to Neighbors food shelf.
